Photodynamic Therapy FAQs

Is Photodynamic Therapy right for me?

Photodynamic Therapy is a great option for those dealing with moderate to severe acne, oily skin, sun damage, actinic keratosis (precancerous lesions), or rosacea. It’s also beneficial for individuals looking to improve overall skin tone and texture. A consultation with Our team will help determine if PDT is the best treatment for your skin goals.

The treatment begins with a thorough cleansing of the skin to remove oil and debris. A topical photosensitizing agent is then applied and left to absorb—usually for 30 to 60 minutes. After incubation, a specialized light source such as IPL or laser is used to activate the solution and treat the targeted areas.
After your session, your skin may feel warm and appear red, similar to a mild sunburn. Peeling or flaking may occur as damaged cells are shed. It’s crucial to avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours post-treatment, as the skin remains highly sensitive to light during that time.
Many clients see noticeable improvement after just one session, but a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart may be recommended for optimal results—especially for conditions like acne or sun damage.
Most clients experience only mild discomfort, often described as a tingling, warm, or stinging sensation during the light activation. The sensation is temporary, and cooling methods may be used to enhance comfort during treatment.
Most clients return to daily activities within 1–2 days. However, it’s essential to avoid sunlight, intense heat, and exercise for at least 48 hours following treatment to prevent irritation or unwanted side effects.
The cost of PDT varies depending on the treatment area, number of sessions needed, and the type of solution used. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed estimate and discuss financing options through Alphaeon Credit, Prosper® Healthcare Lending, and CareCredit®.
